February in Portugal: A Season Lit by Candles

February in Portugal doesn’t rush to impress you.   Soft mornings, silver skies, and a pace of life that invites you to slow down and notice the small, beautiful things. It’s the kind of month that feels made for candles.

It’s when the country exhales after winter without yet rushing into spring. The crowds thin, the pace softens, and the light—oh, the light—returns in longer, gentler stretches. Mornings arrive cool and silvery and you hear the sound of espresso machines echoing down tiled streets. Afternoons warm just enough to invite a walk along cobblestone streets or coastal paths. Evenings still ask for layers, conversation, and candlelight.

 And then there’s Carnival.

Even from far away, Carnival lives vividly in my memory. The color, the humor, the music, the way joy suddenly spills into the streets in the middle of an otherwise quiet season.

Carnival in Portugal doesn’t erase the calm of February—it interrupts it, briefly, beautifully. A reminder that joy doesn’t have to wait for perfect weather or perfect timing.

Lighting a Casa Betina candle in February is my way of bridging the distance. It’s not Portugal—but it brings me closer to how Portugal feels.

It offers a reminder that winter can be lived beautifully. That celebration and stillness can coexist. That warmth doesn’t always come from heat—it comes from atmosphere, from ritual, from light.

From Canada, I light candles more intentionally this month. As the cold lingers, I soften my evenings. I let scent and flame slow me down. It’s my way of honoring the season the way Portugal does.

 The Tealight Sample Kit

February is not a month for rushing decisions. It’s a season of listening—to memory, to mood, to what you’re craving when the evenings grow long and the longing feels closer to the surface.

The Casa Betina Tealight Sample Kit was created for this exact moment.

For those who want to live with a scent before choosing it. For those who carry Portugal in their heart, even when they’re far away.

For anyone who believes that scent—like memory—needs time to reveal itself.

Each tealight offers a quiet introduction. A way to experience how a scent behaves in your space, at night, in winter, when candlelight matters most. Light one after dinner. Another on a grey afternoon.

Let each scent meet you where you are.

There’s no right order. No rush to decide.

Just a series of small rituals—each one bringing you a little closer to the candle that feels like home.

With warmth, Christina
